Hitting for a High Average

Rick Fremin Belhaven SoftballEvery softball player can hit for a high batting average by always squaring their bat so it hits the ball up the middle of the field. Meeting the ball square-on will send it to mid field, enabling batters to increase their batting average and on-base percentage. "They will hopefully win a lot more games," says Belhaven Lady Blazers softball coach Rick Fremin.

"The hitter needs to get her hands inside the ball and that way they're square to the pitch each and every time so that the ball is hit up the middle of the field."

When a pitch is inside of the hitter, says Fremin, players should "clear their hands" in front of their body "and meet the pitch out front."

When the pitch is thrown to the outside part of the zone, players should wait a little longer and then hit the ball in the back part of their stance.

The Lady Blazers, under Fremin, enjoyed a 30-plus win season in 2007. The Lady Blazers broke the college record for homeruns in a season last year with 43, and they also set a new team batting average record, finishing at .319.
