Talk Football: Football for Moms
You're watching your son's football game, and you're clueless. It's time to consult local author Alice Nicholas, a football translator for moms and other motivated females.
Last August Nicholas published Talk Football, a football-for-moms book (replete with gorgeous watercolors!) that has Mississippi women breathing a sigh of relief.
Bonita Favre, mom of Brett Favre, proclaimed Talk Football "a great asset to anyone trying to learn the game."
Carnelia McAllister, Deuce McAllister's mom, called it "ideal for anyone wanting to learn about football."
While watching her three sons play football through high school, Nicholas took copious notes, hoping to understand the game they loved.
In her book, she passes that knowledge on to others. "The response has been great," Nicholas says.
She adds: "The book's whole purpose is to help get the knowledge out to those who have loved-ones playing the game."
Talk Football was high on Christmas lists last year and probably will be this year. Interest has come from unanticipated groups including "80-something-year-old ladies," she notes.
Many are home-bound and watch football now as a past-time. The book has opened a new world for them into football's strategies, plays and players.
They use it almost as a sort of mental conditioning.
"They do cross word puzzles to keep their minds sharp and they figured they might as well start watching the football games to keep their mind sharp."
Nicholas has had book signings at Lemuria, Square Books in Oxford, Reed's Books in Tupelo, The Lodge in Starkville, and Barnes and Nobles in Mississippi State, LSU and Southern Miss. She will be signing at Ridgeland's new Barnes and Noble in Renaissance this October.
The book was featured at special football-for-moms clinics at Mississippi State University; and Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis.

Jackson Prep and Madison Central have also sold it through their boosters club.
You can find Talk Football at local bookstores, or buy it online at www.pecanrowpress.com.
Maybe you'll end up like a group of Madison Central football moms, who told Nicholas they read her book and finally "enjoyed talking with their sons about their positions and the games."
"Which is the whole purpose," Nicholas notes. SS
